In God's Sublime Name

On Farvardin 7th there was another discussion by the topic of translation. The online conference began at 22:24 because we were waiting for our friends to come. Final the conference started with 4 people Mr. Goodarzi who was the discussion handler and 3 students by names of Daniel Sheykhi, Yazdan Goodarzi, Amir Ghadiri and Mr. Goodarzi invited his friend Mr. Yahya Barkhordar who was the major of translation in Australia.

First the discussion handler drop a question that “how do you define translation?” First Mr. Yazdan Goodarzi started speaking and said changing one text from a language to an other languages. The Mr. Ghadiri continued Yazdan’s speaking according Mr.Jokar said feeling is important in translation. Then Mr. Barkhordar said when we want to translate a text we should focus on contents and meaning of words.

Then Mr. Goodarzi asked second question that “what was your first translation and how it was?” first yazdan started speaking and said my first experience was the time magazine in Mr. Jokar’s class we had to find the words and translate the text into Persian, but we had some problems on ordering the words that we know even the meanings. After him Daniel Sheykhi started speaking and said “My first translation was a story by the name of Animal Farm that he is still reading that book and he is still translating the book. After that Ghadiri issued time magazine too and he had some problems with grammars and positions and feeling and about feeling he said “when you write a word in Google translator it can’t translate it well because machines don’t have feeling about the word.

Then Mr. Goodarzi gave an example, for example “when you say give me a hand to a robot because he doesn’t have any feeling he will cut his hand and give it to you. Then Mr. Barkhordar started to say 3 big problems that he had in translation.

1.most text are not accessible on PDF.
2.lack of accessible dictionaries.
3.The PDF’s that are not scanned they are printed or picture that are not transformed to written PDF.

From these 3 problems two of the solved but the 3rd one Is not yet solved. Then Mr. Goodarzi said the 3rd question “how do you translate a poem and a newspaper?” first Yazdan started speaking to say his opinions. He said “if I want to translate something we should separate them to 2 part formal and informal, and about poem I prefer informal and for newspaper formal one. Then Mr. Ghadiri continued “I think when someone wants to translate a text he/she should have a base knowledge.”

then Daniel continued the whole speaking and said “Every language has it own methods for translating. like translating a English language to a Persian language you'll see that with all of that contents you are not seeing any similarity between the words and sentences you translated. For poems as Yazdan said I’m going to use informal way somehow and for newspapers I’m going to use feelings and formal ways.”

After Daniel, Mr. Barkhordar said “I divide this question’s answer to two parts.

1.Transpostions that means original meaning that poem writer wrote should be translated.
2.Ceative that means look at the words and change them true but in our position.

Mr. Goodarzi mentioned two ways of translating form that is related to positions and contents which is related to meaning. It means for form you need to know the language first but in content you should know what you need to translate. Then Mr. Goodarzi asked “what do we prefer form or content ?” first Ghadiri gave his opinion. He said that he prefers both they are connected and we can cut them. Then Yazdan agreed and said when we wanit to completely translate a text we should have both of them and when we delete one of them the translated text wouldn’t be completed. Then Daniel said “It depends on the text we want to translate but most of the time for most of the text we should take care about both of them form and content. For some text we need to pay more attention to form and for some text  we need  to pay attention to the contents of it.”

Then an other question asked by Mr. Goodarzi “if we want to translate a poem which one do you prefer? Content or form ?” At first Ghadiri said I prefer meaning first then I go to form but the text should be trusted and the meaning is important. Then Yazdan said “I’m completely disagree content is not important in translationg poems I think rhythm and righm is more important than meaning. Daniel and Mr. Barkhordar said nothing about this question. After that Mr. Goodarzi asked “if we want to translate a text who do you car? The reader or the person who wrote the text? “Mr. Ghadiri started to say his opinions by saying “we should care to the writer for example in Iran we have lots of censorships in our texts. Then Yazdan started saying that ”reader is more important that the writer. For example if we want to translate one text for Iranian people we should have censorship but in foreign country it’s not like that. Then Daniel said “I completely agree with Yazdan in this case the text is really related to the country so the readers are very important.”

Then Mr. Barkhordar divided his opinions in two parts. Source write and reading. He said some book writers name and he said “but you should have both of the balanced.” Then Mr. Goodarzi said some words to help us: domestication VS foreinization, alienation VS naturalization and dichotomy that means anything that has two ways exactly like this words. At last the discussion finished in23:05. Thanks for paying attention to summary.
